Everyone has heard of the one that got away, some may even have heard of the car that got away. This is the story of a couple, Jack and Kathy who, after 46 years, got their car back.
The car itself is a 1965 Corvette Convertible, bought in 1968 for $2500 from a professional water skier in Minnesota. The couple then brought it back to their home in Nebraska. It stayed with them for two years until sadly they had to sell it the day before their wedding because they couldn't afford the insurance. The Corvette was sold to Steve at Paus Motors of West Point, Nebraska on June 5th 1970.
Later that year was sold for $3200 to Carlae P. in Sioux City, who took exceptionally good care of it until the late 1970's. It was in 1977 that he sold it to a friend in a Corvette Club for $10,000, but bought it back for $8,000. In the mid-80's, Carlae took it to an auction in Bloomington, Illinois on the 3rd weekend of June, and sold it for $20,000.
The trail runs thin at this point, but the buyer may have taken it to Kalispell, Montana, and then possibly to the Reno, Nevada car show to sell it. At this point, the car had a rebuilt engine, original paint, original seats, and 140,000 miles. Jack checked with the DMV's in Nevada, Montana, California, Washington, and Oregon. It was found in Oregon.
A realtor in St. Albert owned the car for 10 years, until she sold it to a Barry M. in Calgary. He had two other cars similar to it, and owned this third for a year. He put two of his vehicles in the EG Auction at the Grey Eagle Casino here in Calgary, where Jack Carter Chev Cadillac acquired it.
Jay, the couple's son, continued to advertise in Corvette Clubs in the Pacific Northwest, and looked occasionally by VIN number to see if he could find the car. Meanwhile, Jack Carter Chev Cadillac was gearing up to display some classic cars in the 2016 Okotoks Collector Car Auction. Among these is the very 1965 Corvette that Jack had been searching for. Two weeks before the Auction, Jay put the VIN# into an internet search after several months of not looking and lo and behold, the car popped up.
Jack, Kathy, and Jay were able to acquire their Corvette again at the auction, and had it shipped back to their home in Wichita Kansas. Jack Carter's was extremely pleased to be a part of reuniting this family with their car.
